Another very popular sport is volleyball, however, it’s more popular with women than men. Volleyball started in 1916 when the US Marines introduced it. Basketball has recently replaced volleyball as the second most popular sport, volleyball is generally practiced internationally. The women’s volleyball team is highly successful in championships, in 2023 the FIVB ranked them 8th. As a result of many successful seasons, many girls feel empowered by playing volleyball. In conclusion, the Dominican Republic sports are very tightly knit into the everyday lives of Dominicans.
