Currently, the second most popular sport is basketball. Since 2007, when Al Horford joined the NBA and became the first Dominican Hall of Famer, basketball has been rising in popularity. Every year, the National Basketball League takes place in the country. There are also many regional competitions, and some well-known competitions are held in Santiago, the National District, and La Vega.
