Lake Enriquillo is the largest saltwater lake in the Dominican Republic, it is twenty-three miles long and eleven miles wide. Lake Enriquillo has the lowest surface elevation in the Caribbean, 44 meters below sea level. Located in the southwestern area of the Dominican Republic in the Hoya de Enriquillo Valley that is between the Serria de Nebio and Sierra de Bahoruco Mountains otherwise, Lake Enriquillo is the only saltwater lake that is home to crocodiles. In addition to crocodiles, it is also home to pink flamingos, and many other water birds making it popular for birdwatching. Lake Enriquillo has saltwater concentrations that are higher than in oceans because of all the small rivers flowing into it and its high evaporation. In the middle of Lake Enriquillo, you can find three small islands: Isla Cabritos, Barbarita, and La Islita. Its biodiversity and rare features make Lake Enriquillo a note-worthy place in the Dominican Republic.
