FLAG HISTORY
The Dominican Republic flag was created in 1844 by Juan Pablo Duarte. After the revolution, Juan had many ideas of freedom and wanted a flag representing the country’s beliefs. However, while he had the idea Concepcion Bona and Maria Trinidad Sanchez made the design. Together they developed a design that showed their country’s freedom and beliefs. Today the flag consists of 4 rectangles: the top left is blue and the top right is red. The colors on the bottom side are reversed. In the middle of a white cross, there is a coat of arms representing the country, it is a red, white, and blue shield with palm branches on each side. Above is a blue ribbon saying “Dios, Patria, Libertad” meaning god, fatherland, liberty. Below is a red ribbon saying “Republica Dominicana” meaning Dominican Republic. Inside the shield, there is a Christian bible open to the verse, to reflect the country’s religion as the Dominican Republic is a country that values belief in god. The colors red, white, and blue have significant meanings for Dominicans: red symbolizes the blood of heroes, white represents salvation or God's love, and blue signifies liberty or the sky.
