ECONOMY PARAGRAPH
The Dominican Republic has an upper-middle economic income and a mixed economy. Before the 2000s agriculture was the Dominican Republic’s main economic driver, some major agricultural products include sugarcane, coffee, cacao, and tobacco. Today, the economy is based mainly on tourism, trade, manufacturing, telecommunications, construction, agriculture, and transportation. This economic expansion has led to a total GDP of about 121 billion USD, making the Dominican Republic 62 in the worldwide GDP rankings. The standard Dominican makes around 10,717 dollars a year. Regionally the Dominican Republic is physically close to Haiti and Puerto Rico, but compared to Haiti’s GDP (19.97 billion) the Dominican Republic’s GDP is several times higher. However, Puerto Rico’s GDP was reported to be 117 billion USD, which is a three percent decrease from the Dominican Republic’s GDP. The Dominican Republic is capable of growing its food, meaning that most agricultural products are exports, other exports include gold, silver, cigars, medical instruments, and other consumer goods. Imports include petroleum, foodstuffs, cotton, fabrics, chemicals, and medicine. The Dominican Republic has many important companies, one of these is Grupo Popular, a leading financial institution. Another major company is Cementos Cibao S.A, a cement company. In the 21st century, the Dominican Republic has seen a consistent growth rate, however, the wealth is not evenly distributed. Thirty percent of the population lives in poverty under horrible living conditions. Despite its small size, the Dominican Republic has one of the largest economies in the Caribbean.
