The Dominican Republic is an island known for its mountainous terrain, with the Cordillera Central Mountain being one of the most important ranges. Located in the western region of the Dominican Republic, the Cordillera Central divides the country into two parts. It is known for its rich biodiversity, some flora species include the Hispaniolan pine, Hispaniolan oak, and Hispaniolan mahogany. It also headstreams three of the nation’s most important rivers the Yuna, the Yaque del Norte, and the Yaque del Sur. The highest peak in Cordillera Central is Pico Duarte, which rises to 10,417 ft, making it the highest in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. Pico Duarte is also a symbol of pride and beauty for Dominicans. The Cordillera Central’s rocky and rugged landscape has limited the construction of highways, leading to sparse settlements. In addition, the Cordillera Central influences the Dominican Republic’s climate. An example is the winds from the northeast peaks causing significant rainfall in the north and drier conditions in the south. The Cordillera Central Mountain's rugged high terrain, influence on climate, and source of rivers make it an important range in the Dominican Republic.
